12 Best Surfer SEO Alternatives in 2026 (For AI Search)

Surfer SEO alternatives are worth a look if you want more AI engines for the money, a cheaper editor, or agents that do the work instead of telling you what to change. Surfer, owned by Positive Group since October 2025, now pairs its Content Editor with an AI Tracker, but the $99 Standard plan checks 25 prompts on ChatGPT once a week, daily tracking on five engines starts at $182 on Pro, and Claude isn't tracked on any plan.

These 12 Surfer alternatives include content editors, brief tools, SEO suites, AI writers and an agentic AI search platform. Prices checked in November 2026.

Editor's note

How we compared these Surfer alternatives

Surfer is a content editor first and an AI visibility tracker second, so we judged every tool on both sides:

  • How it decides what to write or fix, and whether it publishes
  • Which AI engines the entry plan tracks, how many prompts and how often
  • What it really costs per month, and what the cheapest plan leaves out

We've used Writesonic, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and SE Visible, SE Ranking's AI tracker, hands-on. Surfer, Frase, Clearscope, NEURONwriter, MarketMuse, Content Harmony, the SEO Writing Assistant, PageOptimizer Pro, Scalenut, the SE Ranking suite and Search Atlas aren't on our tested list, so we describe them from their pricing pages, docs, changelogs, archived pricing pages and user reviews. Review quotes are condensed from Capterra, Trustpilot and WordPress.org and link to the original.

Orchly is our product. We held it to the same checks and say where it falls short. Checked November 2026.

1. Orchly: best Surfer alternative for content that gets cited by AI

Orchly Content Agent task board suggesting new articles and page refreshes based on AI visibility and organic data
Orchly's Content Agent picks what to write and refresh

Orchly is an agentic AI search optimization platform. It tracks your brand every day in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, with Gemini, Google AI Mode, Claude, Grok and Microsoft Copilot as paid add-ons (it also tracks Meta AI and DeepSeek), and its agents run on their own, on a schedule.

They analyze your AI visibility, your competitors, your SEO and your Search Console and GA4 data, decide what to write and which pages to refresh, and write and refresh them in your brand voice. They keep Brand Brain up to date, find the sites, people and Reddit threads worth reaching, run the outreach and draft the replies, and audit your site for technical SEO and AI search issues with the fixes ranked. You decide whether each agent runs on its own or waits for your approval.

Surfer gives you a strong editor, an AI tracker and a ranked list of recommendations, and you or your writers do each piece of work. Orchly's agents run that work end to end, from AI answers to content, outreach and site fixes, from $49 a month.

The content loop

  • Find the gap. The Content Agent runs on a schedule, watches decaying pages in Search Console and the prompts where AI cites competitors instead of you, and creates the tasks: new articles and refreshes.
  • Write in your voice. Every draft uses Brand Brain, your products, pricing, audience and tone, which the agents keep up to date.

Orchly Brand Brain storing brand profile, products, audience, competitors, voice and knowledge sources

  • Publish. Articles go, directly or after your approval, to WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Wix, Sanity or Ghost.
  • Measure. Page 360 shows each URL's Search Console, GA4 and AI visibility data, so you can see whether the refresh worked.

Optimizing for AI citations

  • Query fan-outs. AI engines run their own searches before answering. Orchly shows those fan-out queries, so you write for what AI actually looks up.

  • Citations and Mention Gap. Which pages AI cites for your topics, and which cited sources skip you.

  • AI visibility tracking. Daily on ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, with Gemini, AI Mode, Claude, Grok and Copilot as add-ons (Orchly also tracks Meta AI and DeepSeek). Surfer tracks five engines on Pro and doesn't track Claude, Grok or Copilot.

SEO data and site health

  • Search Console, GA4 and indexing. Organic clicks, conversions and revenue from Google Search Console and GA4, plus pages Google hasn't indexed.

  • Activation and Site Health agents. The Activation Agent finds the publishers, people and Reddit threads AI cites, runs the outreach from your inbox and drafts the replies. The Site Health Agent audits your site for technical SEO and AI search issues and ranks the fixes. Surfer's Mention Gap gives you an outreach list, and you do the outreach.

Where Orchly falls short

  • No live term-by-term editor. Surfer scores a draft in real time as you write. Orchly's agents write and refresh the content, and you can edit and approve it before it goes live.
  • No Google Docs add-on. Surfer works inside Google Docs.
  • Fewer engines in the base price. Gemini, AI Mode, Claude, Grok and Copilot are paid add-ons on every Orchly plan. Surfer Pro includes Perplexity, AI Mode and Gemini.

Orchly pricing

  • Essential: $49/month for 25 prompts, 20 articles, 1 site and 1 user
  • Pro: $125/month for 100 prompts, 50 articles, 3 sites and 5 users, with AI traffic analytics, custom agents and white-label reports
  • Enterprise: custom, with a customer success manager
  • There's a 7-day free trial, and yearly billing saves 25%.

2. Frase: best budget research-to-publish tool

Frase content research and optimization

Frase is a content research and optimization platform that runs one AI agent across research, writing, publishing and decay fixes, with SEO and GEO scores and AI visibility tracking from $39 a month billed yearly, which suits small teams that want the whole workflow in one cheap plan. We haven't used Frase ourselves, so this section draws on its pricing page, changelog, archived pricing pages and Trustpilot reviews.

Frase rebuilt the product in early 2026. You now ask the agent for what you want in plain language, and it researches, drafts, scores and can publish the page.

Against Surfer, the loop goes further. Surfer's editor helps you write a better page and flags rank drops, while Frase's Content Guard watches live pages for decay and proposes the fixes for you.

The AI tracking is lighter. Starter checks 20 prompts a day on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, Perplexity arrives on Professional, and Claude and Gemini need the $239 Scale plan.

Key features

  • Frase agent. Research, briefs, drafts and optimization from plain-language requests.
  • SEO and GEO scores. Every draft is scored for Google and for AI search, across 16 content types.
  • Content Guard. Watches 10 to 300 live pages for decay, depending on plan.
  • AI Visibility. 20, 50 or 75 tracked prompts, rebuilt in October 2026 with recommendations and sentiment.
  • API, MCP server and CLI on every plan, plus an official ChatGPT app.

Where it falls short

  • Starter tracks only ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
  • Claude and Gemini tracking start at $239 a month billed yearly.
  • Lifetime-deal customers were moved to a legacy app, and some of them say on Trustpilot that this broke the deal.

User reviews

“The AI Visibility tracker shows how I rank across Google's AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini and more, and Content Guard helps me catch content before it drops.” (Source)

“The content it generates is usually a good starting point, and the content calendar keeps me ahead.” (Source)

“Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time it doesn't.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Starter: $39/month billed yearly ($49 monthly) for 1 seat, 10 articles and 20 prompts on ChatGPT and Google AI
  • Professional: $103/month billed yearly ($129 monthly) for 3 seats, 40 articles and 50 prompts, adding Perplexity
  • Scale: $239/month billed yearly ($299 monthly) for 5 seats, 100 articles and 75 prompts, adding Claude and Gemini
  • Every plan has a 7-day free trial with no card. Enterprise is custom.

3. Clearscope: best for clean content grading

Clearscope content grading

Clearscope is a content grading tool that scores drafts from F to A++ inside Google Docs and WordPress, with unlimited users and query tracking in AI answers, which suits editorial teams that hand briefs to many writers. We haven't used Clearscope ourselves, so this section is based on its pricing page, product pages and Capterra reviews.

The appeal next to Surfer is how little there is to learn. A writer opens the report link, writes in Google Docs and watches the grade climb, and you don't pay per seat.

The AI side has grown in 2026. Clearscope's product pages now list ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude for tracked queries, although the pricing page still names only ChatGPT and Gemini. Essentials includes 50 tracked queries.

What you don't get is anything that writes and publishes for you, and 20 drafts a month is a hard cap on both paid plans. At $129 it also costs more than Surfer's $99 Standard plan.

Key features

  • Content grades. F to A++ against the terms and topics the top results cover.
  • Google Docs add-on and WordPress plugin. The grade shows up where writers already work.
  • Tracked Queries. Brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude over time, with query fan-outs.
  • Content Inventory. Connects to Search Console and shows grades and clicks for live pages.
  • Unlimited users and projects on every plan.

Where it falls short

  • 20 drafts a month on Essentials and Business, with extra drafts sold in packs of 10.
  • No Perplexity, AI Overviews or AI Mode tracking.
  • No AI agent that writes, publishes or refreshes pages.

User reviews

“I pushed hundreds of articles from page 2 to page 1 just by grading them in Clearscope, without building a single link.” (Source)

“Useful related-term analysis, but you can get an A++ just by stuffing keywords, and the word count is often wrong.” (Source)

“It's not cheap, but at scale the price is easy to justify.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Essentials: $129/month for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 Discoveries and 20 Drafts
  • Business: $399/month for 300 tracked queries, 300 pages and 50 Discoveries, with an account manager
  • Enterprise: custom, with SSO and custom credits
  • There's a 14-day free trial and no contract.

4. NEURONwriter: best cheap NLP editor

NEURONwriter content editor

NEURONwriter is a low-cost NLP content editor that scores drafts against competitor pages you choose, from $23 a month, with a small AI visibility tracker on every plan, which suits bloggers and freelancers who want a Surfer-style editor without Surfer's price. We haven't used NEURONwriter ourselves, so this section draws on its pricing page, FAQ and Capterra reviews.

The workflow will feel familiar if you've used Surfer. You pick a keyword, choose which top pages to learn from, and the editor suggests terms, questions and a target score as you write.

It's the cheapest way to get that kind of editor. Bronze costs $23 a month against Surfer Discovery's $59 monthly, though Search Console, WordPress and Shopify integrations, the API and unlimited team members only start on Gold at $69.

AI tracking is basic. Every plan monitors 5 to 20 questions in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and ChatGPT and Perplexity cost extra, from $9 a month.

Key features

  • NLP content editor. Terms, questions and a target score from the competitor pages you pick.
  • AI Visibility Standard. 5 to 20 questions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by plan.
  • AI Visibility Advanced add-on. Adds ChatGPT and Perplexity, from $9 a month for 10 questions.
  • Content Designer and AI writing. Drafts and rewrites on AI credits.
  • Integrations, API and MCP from Gold.

Where it falls short

  • ChatGPT tracking is a paid add-on on every plan.
  • Bronze and Silver have no Search Console or WordPress connection.
  • AI drafts need a lot of editing, going by reviews.

User reviews

“Competitor analysis, NLP suggestions and internal linking save me a lot of time, but AI drafts still need heavy manual revision, and it slows down on large volumes.” (Source)

“Content generation is still in its infancy. There's no one-click draft you can use as is.” (Source)

“Easy to use with no experience, and the value for money is perfect.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Bronze: $23/month for 2 projects, 25 documents and 5 AI-monitored questions
  • Silver: $45/month for 5 projects, 50 documents and 7 questions
  • Gold: $69/month for 10 projects, 75 documents, 10 questions, unlimited team members and integrations
  • Yearly billing gives 2 months free. The 7-day free trial runs on Gold, and first plans can be refunded within 30 days.

5. MarketMuse: best for topic strategy

MarketMuse topic modeling

MarketMuse is a content strategy platform, now part of Siteimprove, that models topic coverage across your whole site and scores how hard each topic is for you in particular, which suits content strategists deciding what to write next. We haven't used MarketMuse ourselves, so this section is based on its pricing page, Siteimprove announcements and Capterra reviews.

Surfer works one page at a time. MarketMuse starts from your site inventory, then shows Personalized Difficulty and Topic Authority, so you can see which topics you can realistically win.

It doesn't track AI answers. Siteimprove added AEO insights to its separate Siteimprove.ai Search product in April 2026, but MarketMuse's own plans list briefs, inventory and strategy documents only.

Paid plans are sold through a demo, with no prices on the page. The free plan gives one user 10 queries a month to try the research tools.

Key features

  • Site inventory. Pages, topics and page and topic pairs, updated automatically.
  • Personalized Difficulty and Topic Authority. How hard each topic is for your site.
  • Content Briefs. Up to nine brief types on Strategy, including comparison and listicle briefs.
  • Content Score. A target score from MarketMuse's topic model.
  • Strategy documents. 1, 3 or 5 a month, depending on plan.

Where it falls short

  • No AI visibility tracking in MarketMuse itself.
  • No published prices for paid plans.
  • No Google Docs add-on or CMS publishing.

User reviews

“I switched from Surfer on a deal. It shows the strong and weak points of ranking articles, but it's hard for small businesses to afford, and I'd like a Google Docs plugin.” (Source)

“Comfortable and intuitive, but to get the best features you have to pay a large amount.” (Source)

“Good for organizing content work, but the pricing plan keeps changing, with new limits on what we'd paid for.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Free: 1 user and 10 queries a month
  • Optimize: demo only, 1 user, 100 tracked topics and 5 briefs a month
  • Research: demo only, 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics and 10 briefs a month
  • Strategy: demo only, 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics and 20 briefs a month

6. Content Harmony: best for briefs

Content Harmony content brief

Content Harmony is a content brief tool priced by the number of pieces you plan, from $50 a month for 5 content workflows with unlimited users, which suits agencies and in-house teams that brief outside writers. We haven't used Content Harmony ourselves, so this section draws on its pricing page, product updates and Capterra reviews.

Each workflow bundles a keyword report, a brief and a content grader for one page. Credits stay valid for 90 days, so a quiet month doesn't waste them.

Where Surfer is built for the writer, Content Harmony is built for the person writing the brief. Its keyword reports break down search intent and the SERP features in the results, including the AI Overviews Google shows.

There's no AI visibility tracking, no full-article writer and no publishing. The $10 trial buys 10 workflows with no time limit and no automatic billing.

Key features

  • Content workflows. A keyword report, brief and grader for each planned page.
  • Search intent analysis. SERP features, including AI Overviews, in every keyword report.
  • AI Suggested Headings. Outline ideas you can drop into the brief.
  • Unlimited users and projects on every plan.
  • Rollover credits. Monthly credits last 90 days.

Where it falls short

  • No AI visibility tracking.
  • No full-article writer or CMS publishing.
  • Costs climb with volume, to $299 a month for 50 workflows.

User reviews

“Each Keyword Report tab gives me the top terms, questions and competitor topics within minutes.” (Source)

“Briefs take far less time, but there's little information about seasonality for content and keywords.” (Source)

“As a freelancer I'm careful with tools, and I'm not sure what pricing will look like in the future.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Standard 5: $50/month (about $42 billed yearly) for 5 content workflows
  • Standard 12: $99/month for 12 workflows
  • Standard 25: $199/month for 25 workflows, with plans up to 150 workflows and Enterprise from $1,000
  • The trial costs $10 for 10 workflows, with no time limit.

7. Semrush SEO Writing Assistant: best for Semrush users

Semrush SEO Writing Assistant

The Semrush SEO Writing Assistant is a content scoring add-on for Google Docs, WordPress and Microsoft Word that grades drafts on SEO, readability, originality and tone using Semrush's keyword data, which suits teams already paying for Semrush.

We tested Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit for other reviews, not the Writing Assistant, so this section is based on the Semrush help center and the plugin's WordPress.org reviews.

It covers the same ground as Surfer's editor in a simpler form. You get a score, recommended keywords and readability checks against the top 10 Google results, with no live AI search guidance in the editor.

The limits depend on your plan, and the help center still lists them under Semrush's older plan names, with 2 documents per account on Pro and unlimited documents on Guru and Business.

AI visibility lives elsewhere in Semrush. When we used the AI Visibility Toolkit, Prompt Research was the part we came back to, but 25 prompts per domain at $99 a month felt tight. Semrush One plans start at $199 with 50 prompts.

Key features

  • Real-time scoring. SEO, readability, originality and tone of voice for each draft.
  • Add-ons for Google Docs, WordPress and Microsoft Word 365.
  • Recommended keywords from Semrush's database.
  • Compose, Rephrase and Ask AI. AI writing tools that use Smart Writer Words.
  • Plagiarism checker. 3 checks in total on Pro, 5 or 10 a month on higher tiers.

Where it falls short

  • No AI answer data in the editor.
  • 2 documents per account on the entry tier, per the help center.
  • AI writing allowances are small, from 500 words in total on Pro.

User reviews

“Setup took two minutes. Scores and readability I can get from Yoast, but I like the Recommended Keywords section.” (Source)

“We had the $99 Pro plan and were told to upgrade to Guru to use it, so we went back to Yoast Premium.” (Source)

“It threw console errors on every edit screen and broke our custom post types, so we disabled it.” (Source)

Pricing

  • SEO plan: $139/month, or $117.33 billed yearly
  • Semrush One Starter: $199/month with 50 AI prompts, or $299 for Pro+ with 100
  • AI Visibility Toolkit: $99/month per domain, billed yearly, for 25 prompts
  • Semrush has a free plan with limited data, and paid SEO plans start with a 7-day trial.

8. PageOptimizer Pro: best for technical on-page scoring

PageOptimizer Pro on-page recommendations

PageOptimizer Pro (POP) is an on-page SEO tool built on ranking-factor tests that tells you exactly where to place keywords, variations and entities, with an AI Visibility Tracker on every plan, which suits technical SEOs who want page-level instructions rather than a score to chase. We haven't used POP ourselves, so this section draws on its pricing page, product pages and Capterra reviews.

POP goes into more detail than Surfer. You get keyword counts by page section, word count targets, E-E-A-T signals, Google NLP entities and schema suggestions, and Watchdog warns you when a page slips.

Its AI tracker covers ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, so you get Claude, which Surfer doesn't track. Each run costs 3 credits plus 1 per question, refreshed once, weekly or monthly.

Credits are what to watch. Basic includes 20 a month, a new report costs 2 and the AI writer 3 per 1,000 words, so Unlimited at $62 billed yearly is the realistic starting point.

Key features

  • POP Rank Engine reports. Exact keyword, variation and entity placement for each page.
  • AI Visibility Tracker. ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, paid in credits.
  • POP AI Writer. New pages or rewrites, cheaper in credits with your own OpenAI key.
  • Watchdog. Monitors 10, 200 or 500 pages for changes and drops.
  • Chrome extension for editing in Google Docs, WordPress and other editors.

Where it falls short

  • Credits run out fast on Basic.
  • Recommendations target Google rankings first.
  • No publishing or hosted CMS.

User reviews

“I switched from Surfer for better value. The AI visibility tool is my number one option.” (Source)

“Great for silos and on-page work, but the AI writer mostly just spits out large amounts of text.” (Source)

“It saves time on key pages, but it's a little finicky. I have to log in again after every assessment in the Chrome plugin.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Basic: $40/month for 20 credits and 10 Watchdog pages
  • Unlimited: $72/month, or $62 billed yearly, for unlimited POP reports and 50 credits
  • Teams: $143/month, or $119 billed yearly, for 120 credits, 5 sub-accounts and white-label PDFs
  • Every plan has a 7-day refund guarantee, and extra credits start at $15 for 10.

9. Scalenut: best budget all-in-one

Scalenut content optimization

Scalenut is an AI content platform that bundles GEO article writing, content optimization, weekly AI visibility tracking and WordPress or Shopify publishing from $59 a month, which suits small teams that want writing and publishing in one plan. We haven't used Scalenut ourselves, so this section is based on its pricing page and Trustpilot reviews.

It does more of the work than Surfer at a lower entry price. Starter writes 5 GEO articles, optimizes 5 existing ones and tracks 10 prompts in ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and Plus at $89 adds auto-publishing, internal linking and Social Upreach for Reddit threads.

The tracking refreshes weekly on every plan, and Perplexity only arrives on Professional at $199. There's no Claude or Gemini.

There's a Black Friday early access deal on the page right now, 65% off yearly plans with triple limits, but it's annual only and non-refundable. Several Trustpilot reviewers also complain about billing and cancelling.

Key features

  • GEO article writer. 5, 30 or 75 articles a month, and the same number of optimizations.
  • AI visibility tracking. 10, 25 or 100 prompts, refreshed weekly.
  • Auto-publish to WordPress and Shopify, from Plus.
  • Social Upreach. Keywords, subreddits and competitors to watch on Reddit, from Plus.
  • GEO content audit and cannibalization analysis. 200 to 1,000 pages a month.

Where it falls short

  • Weekly AI tracking on every plan.
  • Perplexity only on Professional, and no Claude or Gemini.
  • Starter has one workspace and no auto-publishing.

User reviews

“Topic clusters and Cruise Mode make long-form content quick, and it's cheap enough for freelancers. ChatGPT writes faster now, though, and I'd like an integration.” (Source)

“I used it for my blogs and my website's rankings dropped.” (Source)

“A lot of bugs, and it's extremely difficult to cancel the subscription.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Starter: $59/month for 10 prompts, 5 articles and 1 workspace
  • Plus: $89/month for 25 prompts, 30 articles, 2 workspaces and 4 team members
  • Professional: $199/month for 100 prompts, Perplexity, 75 articles and unlimited workspaces
  • 7-day free trial with no card. The current yearly deal is $21, $31 or $70 a month, non-refundable.

10. SE Ranking: best SEO suite with a content editor

SE Ranking report

SE Ranking is a mid-priced SEO suite for rank tracking, site audits, backlinks, keyword research and content, with daily AI prompt tracking and a separate AI visibility product called SE Visible, which suits SEO teams that want the off-page and technical data Surfer doesn't cover.

We used SE Visible, SE Ranking's standalone AI visibility tool, on its trial. The SE Ranking suite itself we know from its pricing page and Capterra reviews.

SE Visible was quick to set up. Prompts are pooled across your brands, results refresh daily on ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews, and exports come as CSV or XLSX. We missed a PDF or white-label report to hand to a client, and Claude is still marked as coming soon.

Inside the suite, Core includes 100 prompts tracked daily and 25 content marketing articles a month, next to 2,000 tracked keywords and audits of 250,000 pages. The AI Search add-on, from $89 a month, adds the AI Results Tracker for AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT plus access to SE Visible.

Key features

  • Rank Tracker and Website Audit. 2,000 keywords daily and 250,000 audited pages a month on Core.
  • Backlink and competitor research. Unlimited on paid plans.
  • AI Search add-on. AI Results Tracker for AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, with SE Visible included.
  • SE Visible. Mentions, citations and sentiment, with Competitor Gap Analysis added in July 2026.
  • API credits and MCP access on Core and Growth.

Where it falls short

  • The content editor is a small part of a large SEO suite, not the main product.
  • SEO and deeper AI tracking sit in two products.
  • No Claude, Grok or Copilot yet.

User reviews

“Rank Tracker, Website Audit and Competitor Analysis cover my regular SEO work, though the interface can feel overwhelming when I use several tools together.” (Source)

“The audit report clearly shows what to fix, but data is often missing for certain keywords.” (Source)

“They ship new features quickly. Sometimes the data looks questionable.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Core: $129/month, or $103.20 billed yearly, for 10 projects, 2,000 keywords and 100 daily prompts
  • Growth: $279/month, or $223.20 billed yearly, for 30 projects, 5,000 keywords and 250 prompts
  • AI Search add-on: from $89/month for 200 prompts, including SE Visible
  • There's a 14-day free trial. SE Visible alone starts at $99/month for 200 prompts.

11. Search Atlas: best for automated on-page fixes

Search Atlas dashboard

Search Atlas is an all-in-one SEO platform whose OTTO agent pushes on-page and technical fixes to your live site, with AI content writing and LLM visibility tracking from its Growth plan, which suits agencies and lean teams that want changes applied for them. We haven't used Search Atlas ourselves, so this section is based on its pricing page, release news and Capterra and Trustpilot reviews.

Surfer tells you what to change on a page. OTTO makes the change, through a script on your site, either on autopilot or after you approve each edit.

Everything draws from one monthly pool of Universal Credits, from audits and rank checks to AI articles. AI visibility starts on Growth at $199 with ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode, and Pro at $399 adds Copilot, Perplexity and Claude. Content Genius, its AI writer, reached version 5 in September 2026.

Reviews are split. Search Atlas holds 4.7 on Capterra from 88 reviews and 3.9 on Trustpilot from 352, where recent complaints are about billing, cancelling and the AI features not doing what they promise.

Key features

  • OTTO SEO. Technical and on-page fixes deployed to 1 to 10 sites, depending on plan.
  • LLM Visibility. 100 queries on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode on Growth, six platforms on Pro.
  • Content Genius. AI articles and edits that publish to any CMS.
  • Atlas Agent. An AI assistant across the platform, on every plan.
  • White-label dashboards from Pro.

Where it falls short

  • No AI visibility tracking on Starter.
  • Automated edits to a live site won't pass many review processes.
  • One credit pool for everything makes costs hard to predict.

“I've waited about two weeks for the AI generation feature to work properly.” (Source)

“The AI named menu options that didn't exist, and when I let it make changes, it said they were done but nothing had changed.” (Source)

12. Writesonic: best for writing volume

Writesonic AI article writer

Writesonic is an AI writing and GEO platform that tracks your brand in AI answers and writes 15 to 50 articles a month for WordPress, which suits content teams that want writing volume and AI tracking in one plan rather than an editor to write in.

We signed up and had tracking running within a few minutes. You pick topics, trim the suggested prompts, add competitors, and citation share starts filling in day by day.

It's a different job from Surfer's. Surfer helps your writers improve a page, while Writesonic writes the articles itself, publishes them to WordPress and uses Reddit and Search Console to suggest topics. Starter also tracks 50 prompts a day, against 25 weekly ChatGPT prompts on Surfer Standard.

What held us back was the engine list. Every self-serve plan tracks only ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, so Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and AI Mode need Enterprise. The headline prices are also for yearly billing.

Key features

  • AI articles. 15, 25 or 50 a month, published to WordPress.
  • Daily AI tracking. 50, 100 or 200 prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.
  • Site audits. 10 to 50 a month, depending on plan.
  • Action Center. Fixes re-measured on day 14 and day 28, as a trial on Growth and in full on Enterprise.
  • MCP server and Project Hub, added in June 2026.

Where it falls short

  • Perplexity, Claude, Copilot and AI Mode are Enterprise only.
  • Sentiment starts on Growth at $399.
  • Starter includes 1 user.

User reviews

“Content that took us 2 to 4 days to write now takes about an hour, and it comes ready for SEO.” (Source)

“Good for blog posts, product descriptions and emails, but the output quality feels low and robotic.” (Source)

“The article writer is easy to use, though the platform can be overwhelming at first.” (Source)

Pricing

  • Starter: $79/month billed yearly ($99 monthly) for 50 prompts, 15 articles and 1 user
  • Basic: $199/month billed yearly for 100 prompts, 25 articles and 2 users
  • Growth: $399/month billed yearly for 200 prompts, 50 articles, 3 users and sentiment
  • Enterprise is custom, with all 9 AI platforms. You can start free with no card.

What changed with Surfer in 2026

Positive Group, a French software company, bought Surfer in October 2025, and Surfer spent 2026 reworking its plans around AI visibility. Here's what changed, with dates from Surfer's changelog and archived copies of its pricing page.

  • January: the AI Tracker gained Mention Gap (January 13), sentiment analysis, fan-out queries in beta, owned-content citations and the full AI responses for each prompt. Gemini was added on January 29 for Pro plans and up.
  • New plans: until early January the pricing page listed Essential at $79 a month billed yearly and Scale at $175, with AI tracking only on Scale. By February 4 it showed today's ladder of Discovery, Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind, with Standard checking 25 prompts once a week.
  • May 4: the Content Score started showing SEO and AI search side by side, and Auto-Optimize now switches to AI search once the SEO side is covered.
  • August: a standalone AI Search Analytics plan appeared on the pricing page at $158 a month billed yearly for 100 daily prompts. Recommendations began using AI Tracker data on August 5, and the Surfer MCP server entered beta on August 11.
  • By October 1: AI Search Analytics was repriced to $82 a month billed yearly for 50 daily prompts on all five engines.
  • October 5: MCP left beta for Pro, Peace of Mind and Enterprise. Recommendations now include off-site moves such as pitching or buying a mention, Agent Analytics for AI crawler logs went into closed beta, and the app got French and Polish versions.
  • Still missing: Claude, Grok and Copilot aren't among the tracked engines on any plan.

What Surfer users say

“I've used it for several years to make my internal linking far better.” (Source)

“The real-time score and NLP suggestions take the guesswork out of on-page SEO, but credits run out quickly, and chasing every keyword can make the writing sound forced.” (Source)

“The system kept advising us to write about irrelevant subjects and copy whole competitor articles, and it contributed to a serious cannibalisation problem on our site.” (Source)

When to stay with Surfer

  • You write in a live editor and want a score that moves as you type, in Surfer, Google Docs or WordPress.
  • You want SEO and AI search guidance in the same Content Score, with Auto-Optimize to close the gaps.
  • You're on Pro or higher and the daily AI Tracker on ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini covers the engines you care about.
  • You want to plug Surfer's data into Claude, ChatGPT or another agent through its MCP server.
